Aja Marneweck will be convening a conference entitled The Role of Women in the Development and Creation of Puppetry and Visual Theatre in Contemporary Performance at the upcoming Out the Box Festival of Puppetry and Visual Performance in Cape Town.

Leading female contemporary performance artists, directors, visual theatre leaders, creatives, anarchists, innovators and producers will come together to discuss contentious and innovative approaches to the representation of feminine experience, desire and identity.  With  speakers that include Avital Dvori (Israel), Nandipha Mntambo, Julia Raynham (Resonance Bazar), Mothertongue Project, Mamela
Nyamza, Tamara Guhrs (Njala), Mitzi Sinnott (USA), Caroline Calburn (Theatre Arts Admin Collective) and Tanya Surtees (FTHK), the Out the Box Conference 2010 will be exploring the transformative role women play in the development and creation of contemporary Visual Performance. This discussion will be looking both at the role women play in transforming the creative, social, cultural and political spaces of contemporary performance, the innovation of their craft as well as the development of platforms, programming and production leadership in Visual Performance.

Several interesting workshops and lectures will also be presented: Mechanics of Emotion and The Philosophy of Breath by the legendary Handspring Puppet Company; No Strings Strings Attached/Partnering the Object by the Duda Paiva Company from Holland ;   Humour, Objects and Imagination by Koldobika G.
